The Secret Life of Walter Mitty by James Thurber is a
collection of short stories featuring the title character
Walter Mitty a married man living in the suburbs of
Connecticut. He is known for his vivid daydreams in which
he becomes daring characters such as a Navy captain a
famous surgeon a murder trial witness and a WWII flying
ace. The book showcased Thurbers wit and humor and was
published in 1945 by Penguin Books. It was later adapted
into a feature-length film starring Ben Stiller. James
Thurber was born in Columbus Ohio in 1894 and attended
Ohio State University but did not graduate due to his poor
eyesight. He later moved to New York City and worked as a
reporter for the New York Evening Post before joining the
staff of The New Yorker. Throughout his career he
contributed articles to the magazine and wrote several
books including The Secret Life of Walter Mitty.
