The English Patient is a novel by Sri Lankan and Dutch
author Michael Ondaatje. The story follows four people
living in a bombed-out villa in Italy after World War II.
These characters include an enigmatic English patient who
was burned in a plane crash his nurse Hana the maimed
thief Caravaggio and the Indian bomb expert Kip. The novel
delves into the lives and backgrounds of each character
and the details surrounding the English patients plane
crash and Kips bomb-defusing efforts. It was published in
1992 by Vintage and later adapted into a film directed by
Anthony Minghella and starring Juliette Binoche and Ralph
Fiennes. Michael Ondaatje is a published author of ten
novels and has lived in England and Canada where he has
taught English Literature. He has received numerous awards
for his works including the Man Booker Prize for The
English Patient.
