Billy Casper a teenager living in a mining town is
determined not to work in the mines. He is unhappy with
his obnoxious family and friends. His only true friend is
a hawk that he trains and develops a deep connection with.
However tragedy strikes when a horse kills the hawk
leaving Billy devastated. A Kestrel for a Knave by Barry
Hines is a coming-of-age novel that explores the themes of
friendship family and class in a mining community in
Northern England. The novel has received critical acclaim
for its honest portrayal of working-class life and the
challenges faced by young people in such communities. It
was also adapted into the popular film Kes in 1969.
