A Thousand Acres by Jane Smiley The Cook family has been
farming the same land in Iowa for three generations and
over 90 years. The patriarch decides to leave it to his
three daughters and their husbands to farm and develop. Ty
one of the husbands decides to put aside land for a pig
breeding operation but it ultimately leads to debt and the
family having to sell the farm. The father sued his
children claiming mismanagement but lost the case.
Published in 1991 by Fawcett Columbine Books A Thousand
Acres is one of 8 books by Jane Smiley and is based on
Shakespeares King Lear. Smiley who has a PhD was born in
Los Angeles grew up in a suburb of St. Louis and attended
Vassar. She received her MFA and PhD from the University
of Iowa and is now a professor at Iowa State University.
She lives in Ames Iowa
