To Save a People by Alex Kershaw is a World War II-era
historical biography about Swedish diplomat Raoul
Wallenberg who was stationed in Hungary during the last
year of the war. Wallenbergs plan to print and distribute
Schutzpasses saved the lives of 100000 Jews by offering
them official protection under the Swedish embassy.
Wallenberg also purchased apartment buildings for Jews to
live in which were considered politically neutral spaces
and therefore exempt from the cleansing actions of Nazi
officials. The book is written in a style that is engaging
and immersive as if the author was there himself and
explores the bravery and ingenuity of Wallenberg in his
efforts to save lives. Kershaw is a New York Times
bestselling author and expert on World War II with other
novels such as The Longest Winter The First Wave The
Liberator and Avenue of Spies as well as biographies of
Jack London and Robert Capa. To Save a People was
published in 2011 by Hutchinson Books and has been praised
for its historical value and compelling narrative
